Okay....so on 6/4/08 I bought a red-ear slider(His name is 6'4). And then, 3 weeks ago, I bought a yellow belly(Her name is Vivica). When I put Vivica in the tank, she was sooo active and outgoing, and was just re-arranging rocks and shells, and making herself right home! Like she owned the place! Meanwhile, 6'4 was just in the background hiding. Now, I noticed like a week and half ago that all Vivica does is sit under the lamp, out of the water, and sleeps. I haven't even seen her go in the water nor eat. Maybe she does it while I'm not there...I don't know. But why the sudden change in behavior? Is she sick or pregnant?

  1. Is she eating? Ae her eyes cloudy? Any fuzzy stuff on her neck or legs? Coughing or a wheeze?

If she is eating then she should be ok, if she is not eating./ Generally if you are close to the tank they will zip off the dock and try to escape. If she does not moves when you approach her ..then I beleive she is sick.

Contact the “herpetologicalsocieties.com, for a turtle vet in your city and state

You do know that  they need to bask under a reptile light for  8 to 10 hrs a day for the vitamin D that  they need to grow.

Leave the heater on 75 to 78 degrees always.

Their water needs to be clean otherwise they get sick easily from dirty water cause they p**p allot.

That they  need a good filter system!

You need to feed them feeder guppies, goldfish or minnows for protein and calcium daily drop 20 or so in the tanks and watch them disappear!

They need leafy greens for vitamins at least 3 to 4 times a week.

And a big tank 55 gallons or more..

If she is prgnant then she needs her own tank this is

advisable during pregnancy to keep the female separate from the male, so that she will not get disturbed so much.  You should handle her ONLY when absolutely necessary.  Keep the water very clean and give her enough space.  Heating is also very important as they will spend a lot of time basking to warm themselves and the eggs inside.  You might notice a change in the appetite of the female, she might refuse to eat.  This is normal.  Nevertheless, continue offering her food and consider a dietary change, she might feel inclined to eat certain things only.

Nesting quarters Prepare a 20 gallon tank with about 4 inches of potting soil or soil/vermiculite mixture.

Good luck , need any more help let me know. I hope she is pregnant!

  2. check and make sure her shell is as hard as it used to be. my turtles did the same thing, but the shells basically turned to jello. it had something to do with to much sun or a calcium deficiency.

  3. she is not sick or pregent she is just maybe not used to other turle being around so just give her time to get use to him goood luck

  4. this happened to me, I'm pretty sur she has namonia. (She's to cold) The water in the tank has to be kept at a certain tempature, go buy

    a) some brighter, more powerful light bulbs

    b) A night heat lamp

    c) anything that will make the water warmer

a good way yo tell if she really has namonia, is to put her in the water and see if she floats

This happened to my turtle (Scar) and when I found out it was to late...

If you have any questions e-mail me, Good luck!
