Hi,

My veterinarian tells me that if a dog gets demodectic mange as a puppy and it is treated, that it should never come back.

Is this true??

  1. All dogs have the demodectic mite.  Sometimes if the immune system is compromised the mite can over populate and this is when you notice the hair loss and will require treatment.  It can be a reoccurring problem and can also be genetic.  The good thing with this is that it is contagious to your other pets but it can be an expensive process if you are having the vet do the dips.

  2. For the most part. All dogs get lows levels of demodex mites from their mothers at birth. Dogs that are sick or have compromised immunes systems allowed the mites to get out of control and develop demodedic mange. Therefore, if your puppy has demodex mange, he is pretty sick. If he gets the treatment, and you cure the cause of the reason why the mites got out of control (supressed immune system, was from a puppy mill, was really stressed out, etc.) then he shouldn't get it back again unless something else happens to him where his immune system is suppressed again. Demodex is not contagious to healthy dogs and you need to watch the health of your dog closely to make sure he doesn't get it again.

  3. try doing some research just typing in the kind of mange and say in dogs and find out!
