My wife wants to get her nursing degree since I'm disabled, but we are on a fixed income, and cannot afford the tuition. We have 3 young children. Is there any agency or grants for my wife to retrain? Her job was lost in Feb. when her hospital closed down and she lost her job too? Thank you in advance. I've had 6 vertabrae fused in my spine after 12 operations and I can no longer work after 28 years. My wife lost her job after 8 years at a hospital when it closed down. We have 3 young daughters, 12, 9,and 4. If anyones has information to help us we would really be grateful!

  1. Yes, more than likely she would be able to qualify for a grant.  Go to www.fafsa.ed.gov and she can apply online.  You will get something in the mail and you can then talk to the school about your options.

  2. not sure where you live but if you live in the uk shell be entitled to a £6000 bursary to live on and tuition will be paid by the nhs. also you could be entiltled to welfare benefits

  3. Talk to the school she wishes to attend.  There are plenty of opportunities to get financial aid, grants and perhaps scholarships.  Talk to the financial aid department for assistance.  My wife attended cosmetology school for almost nothing out of pocket.

  4. Every state is different, for example in CA there is plenty of help, the best way is to go to your unemployment state agency and ask.

    Best of luck.

  5. Check out Matthew Lesko and his giant book of gov't grants. Free to apply for and he gives you all the info. Don't buy it new, try Ebay or some other source for cheap/free info. But, there are ALWAYS grants for nurses as they are in such demand. You just have to look in the right places. Try the Feds, then State, then local, then everything else. Best of luck!

  6. Best thing I can suggest is try your local job centre plus or CAB, I am sure you should get some help from somewhere.  Good luck I hope it works out for you both.
