  1. Holland is actually the name for two of the (twelve) provinces in the Netherlands http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Netherlands...

    - "Noord Holland" (in English, "North Holland" where Amsterdam is located within)

    - "Zuid Holland" ("South Holland" where Den Haag/The Hague is located within)

The capital of the Netherlands is Amsterdam http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amsterdam. Den Haag http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Hague is where the government resides.

So the correct name is the Netherlands, but is still often referred to as Holland - especially with regard to supporting the national team such as with the football

..... so who's right?  I have to say that your friend is actually, even though Holland is accepted by (most) Dutch, the correct name, in English, is (The Kingdom of) the Netherlands

  2. NO! Netherlands is a country, and Holland is a province.

It would be kind of like saying Texas and the US are the same thing... Are they?  Of course not!  Why the confusion, I'm not sure, but it goes back a long way.

  3. Actually, Holland is a province (bit like one state among the 50-odd others in US) inside the Netherlands.

  4. yes!

They most certainly are.. I think in America we hear it more commonly referred to as Holland, but overseas, its netherlands.

FUN FACT: Didja know the majority of the Netherlands is under sea level??

I move to the netherlands this weekend.. im going for school :) so excited!

  5. The Netherlands (Dutch: Nederland, also commonly called Holland in English, in reference to the provinces North-Holland and South-Holland) is a Benelux country located in Western Europe and a founding member of the European Union. The Netherlands is bordering Germany to the east and Belgium to the south. To the west, the country faces the North Sea and the United Kingdom. The people, language, and culture of the Netherlands are referred to as "Dutch".

  6. Netherlands and Holland are the same thing...its really weird...and people from there are Dutch.....so you are right.... :D
