  1. Nitrite and nitrate are two different polyatomic ions in which nitrogen has two different oxidation states:

    nitrite - NO2^- N is +3 - found in nitrous acid, HNO2

    nitrate - NO3^- N is +5 - found in nitric acid, HNO3

    If a salt such as NaNO2 is added to water the solution will be basic.  The sodium ion does not hydrolyze, but since NO2- is found in a weak acid, it does.

    NO2- + HOH <==> HNO2 + OH-

    On the other hand, nitrate ion, which is found in a strong acid does not hydrolyze and so a solution of NaNO3 will be neutral.

  2. depends of the strenght of the other constituent, for instans if it is about KNO2, K originate by KOH that's stong base and HNO2 origine by HNO2 that's weak acit, so the water solution of KNO2 will have alcaline reaction.

    KNO3 will have neutral reaction, because both originate by stong KOH base and HNO3 acid,  NH3NO3 will have acid reaction because NH4OH is weak base and HNO3 is a strong acid, so the if something will show acide or base raction depend by that who is stronger

  3. Well nitric acid is acidic (HNO3) the acidity of substances is determined from the concentration of hydrogen ions. In the bronsted-lowry theory it depends on if they dontate or recieve protons. I proton acceptor is a base and a proton donator is an acid. They both would have lost protons so they would be alkaline.
