Don't get in too early, profits are hard to come by and debt is usually high.

Not in companies that invest in Massachusetts. The NIMBY crowd is alive and well. (Not In My Back Yard). These are the same lot, years ago that fought the Cell Towers. (Yet they were the only ones that could afford it)  It took the Federal Government to pass the communications act to say, stop the whining or we will pull federal funds from your state. The same has happened with new and improved power plants, the same NIMBY'S are here and use all of these services. Stay away from any company doing business in Massachusetts until the Fed's force them to.

I have a friend who was going to truck a ton of blades across country made in Germany. Just from that info it looks like there is a lot of effort going into it, so I'm thinking it looks like an up and coming trend?

yes, if you are a long term investor.  You will start seeing ads regarding wind power, but it will take years to make a mark on the market.

from what i have been told the cost of building (and dismantling when useless because they don't last very long) is more than the power they produce in their working lifetime. so invest when and what you like but remember to cash in before everyone realises the truth.
