Tennis is according to a recent poll, but I think whoever did that poll had been hitting the cooking sherry. I think cricket would be the top game followed by AFL.

Cricket is the one that nearly everyone likes in all states, so would be the most popular.

vfl gets all the fans because there is not much else to do there in winter.  

nrl gets the tv ratings because people would rather watch in comfort.

I always thought YA was a place to ask serious questions & have them answered  accordingly by those who 'know' the correct answer! Danny P is correct, a recent nationwide survey showed that Tennis was our biggest sport, attended by more fans then any other.

It depends where you are. In QLD and NSW the primary winter sport is Rugby League. In the ACT the primary winter sport is Rugby Union and everywhere alse it is AFL. But all of Australia are interrested in Cricket when it's summer and neither of these codes are in season. So you would probaly have to Cricket is the national sport as it is the only sport where all states have a strong following.

In terms of both statistics and fans, certainly not in Australia, but almost definitely in NSW.

If you think about it logically, AFL would naturally have more fans since their competition is much more evenly spread throughout Australia...teams in VIC, WA, SA, one in NSW and QLD, as opposed to the NRL's NSW, QLD and one from ACT, NZ and VIC. When you watch the games on tv, even then you see how AFL fills stadiums whereas, and I'm ashamed to say it, the NRL are struggling in attendances. The AFL as well have a really good junior program and, at least in NSW, it's seen as a lot 'cleaner' I suppose than League.

About that survey: tennis and the v8s as well were ranked quite high and cricket, of course. But, in terms of a national competition, it's pretty much just the AFL and NRL...the A-league is on the rise as well, and from my experience, their fan base is a lot younger than the NRL so I'd say in a couple of years, it'll be up there with the two biggies.

Geez can`t argue NRL, Rugby Union and AFL are very popular in Australia. I used to play Rugby League I love watching NRL anyway.
