  1. No.  There has only been one peacetime nuclear disaster and it was not a nuclear explosion as such.  That was the reactor meltdown at Chernobyl  in the 1980s, and it was caused by a bad reactor design and unsafe operation.  The deaths and injuries resulted from a catastrophic release of radioactive agents into the environment.

The Three-Mile Island accident in the 1970s got a lot of publicity, but it was not an explosion and most radiation was fairly well contained.

The bombs at Hiroshima and Nagasaki were nuclear explosions.  And, by definition, they were disasters.  They were not accidents.

To my knowledge there have been few nuclear disasters and most nuclear accidents have been well contained because of safety engineering.

  2. For nuke disasters, try looking for 3-mile island, and Chernobyl in Russia.

  3. A nuclear explosion if from the detonation of a nuclear device (bomb) and a nuclear accident could be the meltdown of a reactor, inadvertent discharge of a nuclear weapon, or release of nuclear materials into the environment.  I would say all of the above are nuclear disasters.

  4. After a nuclear disaster or explosion happen in that place, that place cant be habitable for several years due to nuclear fallout and radiation. Try keyword Nuclear Fallout and Nuclear Radiation.

Nuclear Accident - Unwanted Nuclear explosion (eg. nuclear power plant melt down)

Nuclear explosion  - A nuclear warhead which will explode upon impact or device trigger

Nuclear disaster - effect after nuclear explosion

  5. A Nuclear Explosion can be intentional and controlled and then it is just that: an explosion. Example: military use of atom bombs. If there is damage and/or victims it is intentional, or in the best case "collateral damage". Obviously for the victims it is a disaster.

When an nuclear explosion or other mishap occurs unexpectedly and unintentionally it is a nuclear accident. Such an occurrence may cause a lot of damage and/or victims, but not necessarily so. Example: Three Mile Island.

A nuclear disaster is an explosion or other mishap that occurs unexpectedly and unintentionally AND causes lots of damage, victims and long term problems (fall out). Example: Chernobyl.

  6. nuclear accident: the operator falls asleep and falls out of his chair.

nuclear explosion: the company can't hide the accident well enough.

nuclear disaster: the neighbors were having day of beer and bbq
