  1. You can also consider Scarborough and Mississauga. Both are closer to Downtown Toronto in comparison to place like Brampton or Newmarket. With the high cost of gas it is good to at least be close to Downtown to take advantage of public transportation such as the Subway. North York may be closer to Downtown Toronto than all these places so North York may be a better decision.

  2. oakville is a good area, really nice place, good school, safe, lots of work oppertunity as you are within a 45min drive to lots of cities including hamilton, burlington, mississauga, and toronto.  there is also a lot to do as there is the harbour front, laser tag, mini put, movie theaters, malls, bowling, easy access to toronto (go trains)

  3. Oakville is more homogenous -- pretty much every neighbourhood is nice there. It's excessively "suburban" -- lots of emphasis on lawn quality and big box malls over city culture, but some people love that.

North York is a mixed bag. Jane & Finch ... as much as I hate to say it, is still not that safe an area. Others are bad as well. The areas near Yonge Street tend to be better. Close to Fairview Mall or Thorncliffe Park are not good.

You may find Oakville a cheaper than an area like Lawrence Park or Bayview Village, but if you commute, consider that gas may double or triple in the near future.
