  1. Ultimately, it is very, very bad for the entire planet.  During the Cretaceous and early Jurassic, the oceans underwent what was know as an anoxic event.  This means that the ocean was mostly devoid of oxygen and the life forms that require it to survive.  

    Many scientists now believe that the currently increasing rates of CO2 (caused by the release of carbon from fossil fuel burning) could reach the same levels that were around for and contributed to the last major anoxic events in the oceans.

    I know that Wikipedia isn't the end-all be-all of information, but it's a good jumping off point.

    The short answer is what affects the sea animals affects us in the long run, what happens to us if it is destruction will only benefit the sea and its inhabitants
