  1. no they wont.

  2. no but dale jr has not won a cup and he is the best

  3. No way...I think you need at least three titles..

  4. Considering at the end of 36 races every season there is only one winner of the Cup...they should be considered "one" of the greatest.  It should be followed by a notation that they are a past Cup champion to qualify as to why.  If they have other great accomplishments they can be noted as well.

    Go Jr.>>>>

  5. I personally think that the drivers that are/will be considered some of the greatest and it will always be an argued point.  Example, depending on who you ask or what list comes out, Dale Earnhardt and Richard Petty are always or at least most of the time swapping the #1 position back and forth.  Then you can throw the likes of David Pearson, Cale Yarborough and Jeff Gordon in there and in my opinion, either one could arguably be have the # 1 spot.

I've never liked the fact that Kurt Busch is a champion, but according to the rules that NA$CAR has in place with the chase, I have no choice but to accept it.  Matt Kenseth in my opinion was the last deserving champ that NA$CAR had because he won it by being the best all season long.  So Matt on my list could go down as a great, where Kurt wouldn't, but I'm sure many would disagree.

  6. Q...is tampa bay buccaneers a great team because they won a super bowl....no....championships are hard to win but to be the greatest contributes to other things as well, what kenseth did that year was great but that was the only year so no, and kurt hasnt realyl won at the big events anyway like daytona 500 or at indy so no

  7. They may never be known as "the greatest" but they both will forever be known as champions.

  8. One is great,  but  a  7 time champion, now that is   is the G R E A T E S T!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  9. Well to be honest it is all about perspective. While winning one championship puts you among the elite it does not in my opinion make you one of the greatest. If your going to say greatest i think you have to consider drivers with three or more titles (Richard Petty (7), Dale Earnhardt (7), Jeff Gordon (4), Darrell Waltrip (3), Cale Yarborough (3), David Pearson (3), Lee Petty (3)). So in a nutshell i believe 1 championship in an age where if you make the chase it's whoever is the best and luckiest for 10 weeks at the end of the year should not qualify you as one of the greatest. I have my opinion and all im going to say is i miss you # 3.

  10. Definately NO NO NO...not unless they like break alot of records within that season.

  11. depends. if a driver wins a cup championship early in his career and then for whatever reason can no longer compete in nascar (injury, death, etc.), he could be. but winning championships is not the only way to be considered one of the greatest...

alan kulwicki won one cup championship in 1992 - both as a driver and an owner. he died the next year and who knows if he may have won more championships. and he was named one of "nascar's 50 greatest drivers" when the list was published in 1998.

davey allison never won a cup title - although he did win a daytona 500 - and he too is listed as one of "nascar's 50 greatest drivers."  mark martin has never won a title nor a daytona 500, and he has retired, what, twice, and he appears on that list as well.

as for the drivers you named, i believe that matt kenseth will be considered one of the greats - he and jimmie johnson are the only two drivers who have made every "chase" so far. plus he was the last driver to win a "winston cup" and without the chase format.

as for kurt, it will depend upon what he does from here. he does have the distinction of winning the first ever "nextel cup" - and there will only ever be four of those - and the first to win under the chase format. a win or three at daytona, the brickyard, or a jump in his overall win stats could be enough for him to be considered one of the greatest as well. his best shot, i'm sorry to say, is to pull a newman and move elsewhere. i like penske, but they can't seem to get it together, especially with the COT.

if you check the list of the 50 greatest drivers that nascar put out back in 1998, many of them (if not the majority) never won a championship.

  12. Matt  is one of the greatest. His consistency throughout his career will define that. Even in the seasons when ford has been the weakest link. The one constant remained was Matt Kenseth. Anyway I do think he will win another champioinship before he is done.

Kurt Busch on the other hand will not be considered  a great driver. He is not consistent in inferior cars. After he left Rousch his chances  at another cup were greatly reduced.

  13. Not in my little blue book, but Mike P has the right answer.

  14. 1 cup title no....Ya had R.Wallace and Terry.with 1 and are not in the greatest...look at Mark Martin, no cup champs, but one of the greatset....But when nascar was nascar,(not the race in the last 10) it was all for 1 and all for 1, not to be leading by 412 pts and next week only by 5

  15. I think it might have a lot to do with the era and competition.  Red Byron only won one Cup (the first Cup)...just a thought.

  16. No.  Good. Really good.  Well at least for a season,  but not the greatest.

  17. We're all fans & family, I don't want to be smart, but to answer:  You'd have to beat 7 times now to be the greatest over Richard Petty and Dale Earnhardt.  It's numbers.

Gordon could have done it, till he sponsored Jimmie, and then things in general upped the bar.  It can't be done anymore IMO.

  18. no i think 2 {{{go tony stewart}}

  19. NO

  20. i already forgot they won

  21. kera faith said it perfectly

  22. They will be known as Past Champs.

  23. Bill Elliott and Rusty Wallace both won one Cup title and they're both legendary drivers.

This is my opinion, others' opinions may differ.

  24. It means they were the cream of the crop for at least one year, I'd consider that great. Better than you or me anyhow LOL!

  25. depends

  26. All that matters is Matt Kensith beat Jr. for rookie of the year and a Championship.  Matt knocked the proverbial golden spoon out of Jr's mouth...

  27. i would say good not one of the greatest

  28. Well if you put it that way. Yes. Not too many drivers win a championship. It's multiple championships that really make you stand out from the best race car drivers.

  29. Why don't you ask all the Jr fans? All of the Jr fans I have ever encountered consider him to be one of the greatest & he doesn't have 1 cup championship.

And yes I think that some of those drivers whom have only won 1 championship will be considered the greatest of their time. As are many who never won a championship, Mark Martin, Davey Allison, etc......

And let's not forget that Matt Kenseth was the last to win under the old points rules. He won the hard way, consistancy all season, not just the last 10 races. And I truely believe that had they left the points the way they were some of the past championships would have been won by different people.
