Is one day of excess calories likely to cause problems?

Today I started off eating healthily, as usual, with porridge oats & sliced apple for breakfast and a wholemeal egg & cress sandwich and some grapes for lunch, but this evening my parents came over to visit and we went out to Subway for a meal. I don't know what possessed me to overdo it so much but I had a huge footlong meatball marinara (honey oat bread) with barbecue sauce and a white choc & macadamia nut cookie.

Now, I've been on my feet all day walking around so I've worked off some of those calories at least, but probably nowhere near enough. Is one day of having a big calorie excess likely to cause weight gain?

  1. yes

  2. If you usually eat healthy, then this is absolutely fine. It can actually boost your metabolism :)

One day won't make a huge difference, as long as you keep on track for the rest of the week you'll be okay :)

  3. If you make up for it the next day, then you should be okay.

Eat only fruit tomorrow to cleanse, and you will be back on track.

Just don't make it a habit.

  4. Be realistic, one slip is not going to make a difference to anyone. provided you are basically eating healthily and your calorie intake and exercise regime are appropriate, nothing is going to happen!

  5.   One day isn't going to do much harm , It takes about 3,500 calories to lose or put on a lb so unless you had that amount of extra calories you should be ok, just get back to your healthy eating and you will be fine

  6. No way - only an obsessive diet that lasts for weeks/months.

  7. I take saturdays off and eat what I like.  Depriving yourself of things you love will always make nutrition feel like a diet.  I hate that so on Saturday I eat what I like but in moderation and then on Sunday I am back on my nutrition plan.

You have to cut yourself a break every now and then.  If you give up everything you love it makes it all the more tempting from day to day.  Just remember not to over do it in the eating what you love department but it will make it easier for you to stick to the plan during the week.  It makes it more fun to eat healthy weekly looking forward to the saturday when you can have that cheese enchilada (my favorite).Good Luck!

  8. It might seem that eating one meal that is high in calories is the cause of the weight gain you see... if you weigh yourself daily. In reality, going off your diet for one meal is not causing the weight fluctuations you see on the scale from day to day. The body requires water to digest food. When you eat more than normal your body will retain more water. If you continue to follow your diet you will see those few pounds that seemed to appear overnight to come back off in a few days.

If you find you are gaining weight recently, keep a food diary, you may be consuming more calories than you think, or not burning as many calories as you used to. Watch out for things like high calorie beverages, alcohol or fat laden salad dressing.

  9. no look ur okay u might gain .5lb MAYBE if that cuz u need to eat like 5000-6000cals in a day to gain a lb considering u are very active 3500cals over what u burned will make u gain a lb u didnt do that

  10. ceps12 is wrong. One day won't do anything exept make you bloat for a little while afterward. You eat healthy, so you should let yourself enjoy a treat sometimes.
