Question:

Is online banking safe from a shared computer?

I'm going out of the country and I will need to access my bank statements while I'm abroad. But I will only be able to get online from a public computer. Will this be pretty easy for hackers & identity thieves? Any suggestions on how I can protect myself? Thanks in advance!

  1. All banking sites have their own security measures, and it should be secure.  If you notice at secure websites, there is an S after http.

    for example:  https.www.banking.com

  2. If you are truly worried you might try using a program called Firefox Portable.  This is a mobile version of Firefox that you install on a USB thumb drive.  The nice thing about this is you can use some of their security extensions such as No Script along with your bookmarks which can be very handy.  Just follow the instructions for installing and copying your bookmarks and when you are at a public computer input the thumb drive, open the Firefox portable folder and launch your browser without worrying about someone else accessing your information since you aren't using the public computer's browser but your own.

  3. Yes, it's safe. Just don't tell the computer or website to "remember" your settings, username or password.

  4. Well, set it to not remember any informaiton, and to be safe go to tools, options, delte personal information, and delete the history of everything if its mozilla, and if its ie go to control panel, and somw=ewhere there is that option.

  5. Make sure that you always sign out.

  6. A good Bank will have a double layer security measure.

The online service will ask for an acces number, a PIN, and then ask for numbers or letters from a card they supply.

Only you have those values on that card.

Internet Cafe? Just be carefull of who may be watching, be descrete when using the keys.
