  1. Doctor, yes, physician, no.

They are dentists with a lot of extra training in oral and MF surgery.

As far as respect, they seem to get respect in the OR's where I've worked.  Where I trained, though, they routinely took 12-16 hours to do their face-breakers (private practice OMFS do those in 1/3 that time), so we hated to do their cases.

  2. hello,

I dont think an OMFS is in any way less respected than a general surgeon. As both are a masters degree and specialised in their own field. Its unlikely that a general surgeon may venture to do a maxillo facial case.In a respectable hospitals are doctors are respected equally. Most countries require that an OMFS pass the basic medical degree before they can start a surgical practice

  3. Yes, of course. Although they are from the same breed as Dentists they are far more of a real Dr. than a dentist is. However most of them are not MD, some are though.

  4. It's a dental, not a medical, subspecialty. If you want to know about respect, find an emergency physician who's scrambling to find somebody to wire a broken jaw together. They're worth their weight in gold!
