Question:

Is org chem required to take biochem? ?

I just started my fall sem and I decided to take biochem without knowing that org chm was required. My instructor said I could still continue without it. Do you think it will affect my biochem class and tests since I haven't taken org chem yet? Or do you think I can go on with it without org chm?

Thanks :)

  1. If there were no administrative hang-ups, don't worry about it.  Most of the kids who took org in the spring probably can't even remember 1/5 of what they learned, anyway.

  2. up to you but you might want to learn o chem on the side

  3. No it doesn't need exactly.I myself read bio chemistry without organic chem!!!sure!don"t worry!!!

  4. Take it alongside biochem, if you can. I believe it should be a part of it. I don't know, because biochem will be my major. I need basically the pre med courses for biochem, and my university recommends it. I still will have to take prereqs like physics. Although, a friend of mine will take organic this fall with her upper level classes so don't worry. Ask this same question from the department or your professor if you don't get a definitive answer from us.

    Good luck

  5. I strongly advise you to have organic chemistry first.  It will introduce you to the basic structures in organic compounds, e.g., hydrocarbons, alcohols, aldehydes, ketones, acids, esters, bond types, aromatic structures, and on and on.  This knowledge is critical to understanding biochemistry.  If you start biochemistry without organic chemistry, you will be behind from the very start.

Having said that, I found lots of organic chemistry to be not very helpful with understanding biochemistry.  Those were the parts that dealt with organic synthesis using non-biological methods.
