Say, if a package of eggs say organic, that doesn't necessarily mean the hens had free-range, right?

  1. Organic means it hasn't been given hormones and antibiotics and stuff.

Free range means it's not kept in a cage all the time.

So no they're not the same.  You can have an organic chicken/egg that's not free range.

  2. Right. "Organic" means that the chicken was not loaded with antibiotics to speed growth or other, similar, goodies. "Cage-free" means that the chicken was not confined in a small cage. "Free-range" means that the chicken had even more room to roam about and eat and hide from hawks.
