  1. What insects are you finding on your plants?

Using a product that just kills everything off is a very thoughtless choice because it will destroy your pollinators as well, which will give you a poor crop anyway.

Wait until you see a bug in action and then select the appropriate measure to control it.  Could be slugs, in which case a plastic lid full of beer is a good organic solution.

  2. Safer's Insecticidal Soap or it's commercial cousin, Mpede work well in my garden for most purposes.

  3. It's sevin dust, not seven which is a number.

When you go organic you are not just replacing one pesticide for another. When you go organic you are attempting to create a balance in the eco-systen within you garden and using nature to do the pest control for you. this takes several years as the Sevin dust kills all insects it touches including all the beneficial insects out there (which make up around 95% of the insect world BTW). when you kill off your beneficial populations, which you have done by using such poisons as Sevin dust in the past, what happens is the pest insects always come back first and colonize and area and eat whatever is there to eat. The beneficials will come back only after the populations of the pest insects (their prey) have reached a level where the predators can feed well. This usually takes a couple of seasons. so every time you resort to using a toxic non specific [pesticide such as Sevin dust or even organic 'cides such as pyrethrum or rotenone you set back your goal of balance by at least a year.

People really need to learn more about what they are doing when they go "organic". It is not about avoiding certain toxins. It is about building soil and creating and maintaining a healthy eco-system that is in balance. Because when you have that balance you do not need any pesticides and in fact, any insecticide, organic or otherwise, will harm the balance

So to answer your question, no, Sevin is not as good as organic pest control in that is messes things up and condemns the user to having to repeatedly re-use the pesticide.

  4. pesticides should be used against specific pests, not as a broad cast to just kill things.

many insects are beneficial and should be left along, the praying mantis and the lady beetle for example.

  5. Well, I have a pepper plant. If you want something that works really well, but is orgainic, try getting some lady bugs. They eat aphids and mites that chewed on my pepper plant. I also had a spider move into my plant, and all the larger bugs seem to be gone.

  6. Without knowing what your pest is, it's hard to say.  Organics  and must be reapplied every day or two as the sunlight often breaks them down quickly.

Sevin (carbaryl) is pretty toxic stuff and murder on any bee that happens by.  There's also a waiting period between spray and harvest.

Is the damage to where the whole plant is in danger or just aesthetically undesirable?  If just aesthetically damaged, don't bother with control.
