Is paris worth it??

just back from it, its the most expensive place ive ever been, and greatly overpriced for everything, however do people think it is worth it??

Well, for the sake of disclosure it's hard for me to be objective, seeing as I was born in Paris, and used to live there. Having said that, I don't know that it's all that expensive. Someone mentioned "double figures" for a cup of coffee. I'm not sure where she went, but frankly, the last time I was in Paris, an espresso cost about one euro at the counter, and perhaps about 2 euros in the "terrasse" (seating area). Granted, that was back in November of 2002, and prices have surely gone up since then, but I doubt that the increase has been all that outrageous. As for lodging, I find that you can get a decent (read: clean, safe, and equipped with a bathroom and shower) hotel room in or just outside of Paris for roughly 50 to 60 euros, if one knows where to look. (Hotels such as Etap, Le Tolbiac, etc.) From what I gather, cities such as but not limited to Copenhagen and Tokyo are far pricier than Paris. And as for New York City (I live a few minutes away from the latter), it's not uncommon for hotel rooms to cost well in excess of 100 dollars per night. I'm not saying Paris is cheap, but you don't go to places like Paris or Rome for bargains- you go to experience visiting cities that are one of a kind. (There are relative bargains to be found regardless...) Parisian prices are a bit like Parisian weather- people don't go there *BECAUSE* of so much as *IN SPITE* of that.

My experience was pretty good despite several things. I do plan to go back because there's still plenty more to see that we (went as a huge group)missed- I was there for 2 days! But Paris is something to experience- good, bad and indifferent.

The French people we met were not the sterotypically rude ones, they were pretty nice especially the little store owners. You do need to meet them halfway and attempt their language though even if you're asking 'where' the time 'is' instead of 'what' time 'is it?' (that's what my friend did!)

But...it's PARIS!!!  I´m pretty sure, from what I have seen, it´s not any more expensive (at least not significantly so) than the rest of Europe.  It isn't so much that Paris is expensive as that the Euro is high and the US Dollar is low.  That makes everything more expensive for Americans.  The downside is that the dollar may not go high again for quite a while, so if you want to go, you need to save more and just do it, or you can wait and hope...that you outlive this recession.

I'm going next year.  Don't care what the dollar does.

I went a couple of years ago and couldn't believe the price of stuff there.

Even to get a coffee and sandwich ran into double figures.

It is a lovely city but I hate getting ripped off.

Paris is what you make it to be. you have to absorb yourself into the culture and not worry about the price. I have been to Paris and there are some good and bad points bit it's no different to any city, but lets face it they do things with a bit of style. What we did was eat a baguette in the morning with cheese £1. have either a Grand Prix meal for £15 which consisted of 2 courses or find the Chinese quarter which was even cheaper. At least you know what it is like now so just enjoy the experience.

I've traveled the world a lot, and Paris, though I've only been once compared to 6 times to India, is the most wonderful place I've been. I just loved it there. The best way to travel anywhere in Europe is home exchange. My family swapped homes with a french family and we truly got to experience Paris, living like a Parisian in an apartment for 10 days.

How can people say Paris is so expensive when it's one of the cheapest capitals/main cities in the western world?! I mean you can easily find a decent room for under 60 €, a 3-course meal at the restaurant costs 12-15 € (all taxes and service included, no need to tip!), museums are half the price of American prices, most clubs have no admission charge...

I mean, come on, if you want to travel on a budget you have to travel smart and prepare your trip a bit to know where/when to go, don't go to cafés right outside the tourist attractions where prices are twice those of the place just one side street away.

For a city that has so much to offer it is not overpriced. Strolling along the Seine, visiting Notre Dame, walking in the lively and historic streets, admiring the architecture and enjoying the local atmosphere cost nothing and still make for a wonderful traveling experience.

And it's not Paris's fault if the dollar is weak and the exchange rate so bad.

Been to Paris on a budget numerous times (hotel with breakfast: 28€/night, 10€ meals on average) and can't wait to go back.

Yes, it's worth it! Paris is fancy and lots of people can't afford to go there. People will probably be jealous that you've been to Paris! Paris has lots of nice resturarants, stores, and buildings there! They have interesting things there to do.

If you don't think Paris is worth it, then you didn't do it right. There's Musee D'Orsay, the Louvre, Arc Triompe, Eiffle Tower, Sacre Coure, Jurden Tuillieries, the Seine River Cruise, Notra Dame, Musuee Rodin, Champs Elysee, L'Orengerie, the shops, the restaurants, the culture, I could go on and on and on. What kind of drugs were you on, that you didn't enjoy it?

I enjoyed Paris the one time that I was there.  I agree, it's VERY expensive and some people (especially waiters) were incredibly rude.  I'll probably never go back.

Like all capital cities, it's expensive and full of rip-off merchants .  That's half the fun.  There's also cheap if you look for it and can speak French.  Holidays are about spending money and broadening the mind.  If you don't think it's worth it, stay at home.

Hmm Its definately expensive - Im British - so its not that expensive to make the trip out there, but once there it can be different story.

It depends what it is you intend to get out of it:

If you just wanna shop - its amazing, but there are certainly cheaper places to go. If you intend to go for a stroll and go up the Eiffel Tower, walk down Champs Elysees, go to the Louvre - in themselves it may be seen as being quite expensive and not really worth it depending on how much doing those things meant to u.

But if you make the most of Paris, I think its definately worth it - you just need to research a lot beforehand to make it cost effective.

The following are things that me and my friends did which made our experiences in paris more memorable thus worth it:

1) Going there for News Years - amazing experience. Airs electric.

2) Have a picnic near the Eiffel Tower - not just going up the Eiffel Tower -  you gotta eat so technically costs nothing

2) Go down into the Catacombs - enjoyed it Rome and Paris was just as brilliant - not expensive

3) Eating ice cream with the rest of the tourists at Notre Dame and entering the Catherdral.

4) Culture - uve got to have a love for arcitecture, and museum to truly appreciate the experience. Certain days Admission fees are waived so go on the free days u wouldve saved money.

5) Food - Bars, Clubs etc doing to the decent restaurants - Le Grenier was great, Le Tribal Cafe etc -

- free dance floor Thursday through Saturday nights starting at 2:30 a.m. There are loads of similiar places.

There are numerous free/cheap things you could have done whilst in Paris. So the trip to paris doesnt necessarily have to be complete strain on your bank account.

Paris is worth the trip. I recently visited for the first time and spent 5 days there; although I don't think I would spend more than 1-2 days at a time there again, it's an amazing place for a first-time visitor. Paris is just saturated with amazing history--if history isn't really your thing, it's a great place to go for people watching and strolling.
