  1. there is no such thing as a non-profit hostpital, even if it says it is. You think everyone in that place works for free?

  2. Parkland is a county funded hospital.  That means that taxpayers pick up the tab for those who do not have insurance or are unable to pay.  It is definitely not for profit.

I don't understand the second part of your question.  This hospital serves a wide variety of the population since it picks up most severe emergency cases.

  3. It is a county taxpayer funded hospital.  While it is "not for profit" organization, the hospital still makes a profit, it is just recorded in "net assets."  If you have insurance, they will use it and charge just as much as any other hospital.  However, for those who cannot afford it, do not have Medicaid, and live in the taxpaying area, it will be paid for funded with the hospital district tax dollars.  For some, they will arrange for them to get Medicaid to get it paid for that way.  The financial services department will find any and every outlet of getting the bill paid by another program before they deem it to be "uncompensated care."

If you are seriously injured or burned, no matter who you are, Parkland is absolutely THE place you want to go.  It is a level 1 trauma center and is one of the best in the nation.  However, after you are stabilized and out of danger, you will probably enjoy your stay better at a more boutique hospital.  My SIL used to work at Parkland...the guy you saw on the 5:00 news who just murdered someone and then got shot by police may be handcuffed to the bed next to you.  Seriously.
