Is paying for Pre-Paid Legal Services worth it?

Someone from work (an "Independent Associate") is trying to sell me the Pre-Paid Legal Services. It sound like they really don't do too much for you and some reviews online say that it is a hassle to cancel the services.

  1. A lot depends on what services that particular organization offers and whether you will use it.  Some offer wills and trusts as part of their services and most attorneys charges start at around $1500.  You really have to determine for yourself and your needs whether any of the services that they offer will be of use to you.  We had it free as a perk through hubby's work and found none of the services that being offered were comprehensive enough for our needs.

  2. I joined PPL for a few months.  When I had a legal situation, all they would do is write one letter, and then said I had to pay a "reduced" rate for all services beyond that.

Their reduced rate is almost equal to a full non-discounted rate from a good lawyer in my city.

Yes, it took many phone calls and lots of being on hold - they tried to tire me out, but I prevailed.

I will never go back to them again - it's a waste of time & money.

  3. Generally, not worth it.

It sounds good on paper but, from what I have been told, not many lawyers accept pre-paid legal and no lawyer accepts pre-paid legal if it is for something "major".

  4. Pre paid legal services are not worth it.  How often have you used an attorney in the past and how often do you intend to use an attorney in the future?  If the answer to either question is "not often" then I would do it the old fashioned way and get referrals when needed.
