  1. It is while you are in it, but the standard tour is 27 months; 3 months of training and 24 months of service. Some (not many) volunteers re-up for another 24 months in the same job. A very few do a second 27-month tour in another country. After it is over you go home, get a dull job and spend your odd moments day-dreaming about being young, thin and making a difference; living in a thin-walled shack, the tropic night like a swath of warm black velvet with a bucket full of diamonds scattered across it.

  2. Generally you have to travel to work with the Peace Corps.

If the Peace Corps operates in the country where you live then you may be able to work with them part-time. My uncle worked for the PC for many years and they were always delighted to have people from the country where they were working help out - especially with language and figuring out the societal norms for behavior!

    Good luck!

  3. you start as part-time and eventually full time

  4. Peace Corps is full time. They send you to another country for two years. You get a stipend and your living expenses are paid for, so it's not quite like you're volunteering your time on your own money. My friend did Peace Corps in Russia and loved every minute of it.

  5. It's hard to call it a full time job. It's more like a full time life.

Yes it's a job. You are interviewed, you get paid, and you have someone to answer to.

But you have to commit to 27 months of service. You travel to a foreign country, where you live and work.

No it's not your average 9-5 job, but it is an experience worth looking into!

  6. PeaceCorps prefers candidates who have a career -- they want people with work experience.
