Question:

Is pedialyte okay to give?

My 16 month old daughter (about 20lbs) woke up at 3:30am vomitting. She vomitted 4 times within 3 hours, and she also has diarrhea. I looked at bottles of pedialyte, but they say not to give to children under 2 unless consulting a physician. Is it still okay to give her some? She refuses to take milk or water.

  1. my sister gives her 5 month old  pedialyte. She gives him 4 oz every 2 hours.

  2. yes Pedialyte is what you are suppossed to give a sick baby.  Give her about 4 ounces every few hours so that she doesnt get dehydrated

  3. Definately, just give her afew oz. I used to delude it with some oz. of water. It'll help keep your child hydrated.

  4. It's the electrolytes in pedialyte that help to keep the child hydrated. The thing is that the electrolyte dosage is a good healthy dose and getting a dose that is too large for the body (any body, it just varies how much it can take depending on the size) can flood the system and actually cause diarrhea to worsen which in turn could potentially increase the problem (usually this doesn't happen unless the child his having nothing except the pedialyte for more then 24 hours or if baby suffers from diarrhea already). One of the ways to decrease the potential for this happening is to use gatorade instead. My pediatrician explained that gatorade has the same electrolyte as the pedialyte except at a slightly lower dosage therefore reducing the risk of the child getting to large a dose. You can always cut the pedialyte and/or gatorade with water too (maybe 50/50 water to pedialyte/gatorade or 25/75 water to pedialyte/gatorade, whichever you choose to use) too. When in doubt, you can always call your pediatrician's office and ask to speak with the nurse. Poor baby (and poor mommy too!).

  5. yes.

my son is 15mths old, and a month ago, he came down with a terrible heat rash that caused spotting all over his torso and neck. the doctor said to keep him cool and hydrated or else it would get worse and I would have to take him to the hospital. I bought some of those pedialyte freezies, and gave him one per day (because he was refusing liquids)... he was fine, and it actually went away in 3 days as opposed to the 7-10 days I was told that it would last. :)

If you're really concerned, just give her less than what it says to give a 2yo, half or 3/4 of the dosage.

  6. I have given my daughter pedialyte ever since she was one.. when the are younger they say to give them only the clear kind but at 16 months she's fine to have pedialyte..

  7. YES! you just have to wait one hour after she vomits! Her stomach is still upside down. Wait one hour and give it to her. You can also try sprite and crackers.
