Question:

Is pepper spray allowed in checked baggage on an airplane?

I looked at the TSA website and it doesn't say anything about it. It says that tear gas isn't allowed, but nothing about pepper spray. I'm just bringing it for my own safety and of course...I won't carry it on with me...I just want to put it in the checked baggage. Thanks =)

  1. Prolly ok in checked baggage!

  2. You'd have to check with your airline to find out, but I know that when I tried to fly with it a few years ago I was told that I couldn't take it.  I think I was flying with Delta.

Be extra careful if its an international flight you're thinking of taking it on, as some countries don't allow it.  (Ireland for example doesn't allow civilians to carry it)

  3. Actually, the TSA website does mention it:

Mace/Pepper Spray - One 118 ml or 4 Fl. oz. container of mace or pepper spray is permitted in checked baggage provided it is equipped with a safety mechanism to prevent accidental discharge. For more information visit www.faa.gov., click on Passengers, then Preparing to Fly.

  4. Yes, according to www.tsa.gov, you can carry up to 4oz in a safe container.

I'd use a zip lock back or a small cosmetics case.
