In both countries you get what you pay for.  In Peru if you want a horrible experience on the Inca Trail, pay a budget company.  If you want a great experience, pay more to a reputable company.  In Ecuador if you want a lousy experience in the Galapagos pay for a budget cruise, etc.

having lived in ecuador as well as peru I woud say in general expenses for like food and travelling and stuff are less in peru..

I spent a whole lot more in ecuador...

not doing any crazy tourist stuff. just living there. ecuador is a lot more touristy.......

They have about the same prices over there. Both countries have different currencies (US$ in Ecuador and Nuevos Soles in Peru). However, that doesn't make one thing more expensive than the other since what cares is what you can buy with that money and not how many currency units you can get with your dollars. (Being able to exchange US$1 for 120 Japanese Yens doesn't mean Japan is cheaper)

Anyways, things in Peru are cheaper in general but I wouldn't call them considerably cheaper, just a little difference.

Ecuador used to be much cheaper few years ago because of their political crisis and their currency was no good anymore. That's why they started using US$.

well, the money exchange for an us dollar is about s/3.20 in Peru, while in Ecuador the official coin is the US dollar , so you can easily use your own there. I don't know, anyhow the change rate doesn't says much either.

I'm from Peru, and recently ( well, not that recently , it was 6 months ago, last vacations we had )  a group of my friends went to spent some time in Ecuador , to be honest they say it was boring and they came back sooner than what they had planned , but at least they found the level of life was ok , I mean, you could buy good stuff for less money .

Anywhere you choose, I recommend you to stay in the provinces, the capital toujours are crowded and people; is not very nice , contamination is high in Lima and also in Quito I believe; and it's always more expensive to stay in the capital.. well, I hope this helps. Good luck with your trip! :)

I traveled very cheaply in both countries... The American dollar has made commerce in ecuador very simple, however the nuevo sole also has a good exchange. It has been 5 yrs since I was there, so I am not sure what the exchange is. If you know spanish you are at an advantage in these countries. There are beuatiful spots to go that are not as touristy in both locales. However it may be more necesary to know the language in some of those spots. Ecuador has beach resorts that are not as well known, some of which are cheap, and very beuatiful. Bahia de Caraquez was the one I visited... I would recommend. There are cheap flights with in the country in both countries, and Buses are also very cheap. You will find an average of 1 dollar an hour on loger haul rides. Quito, I found to be a beutiful city, and Cuenca also... there are cheap hostels that are still quite nice. Cuenca has some very interesting history, and is one of the safer, cleaner cities of the Country. There is also some very interesting and cheap tours through the amazon. I spent a month out there and REALLY recommend.

Peru has also nice buses that travel cheaply. I recommend tours into the Andes, away from Cuzco. Prices are higher there because of MachuPichu. Cajamarca is an interesting alternative... and there is a very interesting tour where you are able to help build a stove for the natives and eat with them, staying amongst the people. As far as a difference between the two, I would not say because it has a lot to do with where you want to go... hope this helps.
