  1. Both are  non renewable energies

  2. I'm going to give you the geologist perspective (which tends to look at the time scale a little differently than other people).

Oil is a renewable resource (from a geologic point of view).  The process through which oil is created (the rapid burial of organic material in an anoxic environment, plus pressure and heat) is still an ongoing process.  This is a process that can take thousands to millions of years, but it is still an ongoing process.

Additionally, some of the earlier answerers mentioned that there is only a 40 year supply of oil left.  What is misstated about the number is that it is calculated as a commodity, not as a physical object.  The 40 year calculation is an estimation of how much oil there is available that can be profitably recovered at current prices.  If the price increases, that also increases the amount that can be profitably recovered, and the inverse if price decreases.

Last thing on oil, there are still oil fields being discovered every day, so any estimation of how much oil remains is purely a SWAG  (Seriously Wild A** Guess).

Nuclear power is a renewable resource.  All nuclear material is undergoing decay.  It is this decay process that produces the energy that we are after.  Most nuclear materials will eventually become lead (that is the most common decay product).  The decay process (usually referred to as a half-life) can be anywhere from a couple of minutes to millions of years depending on the particular radio-nuclide.

Most radioactive material is created in association with volcanoes or rifts (mid-atlantic rift).  So there is new nuclear material being created.

Of course this may not be the view that alot of people take, but then again, people usually say that us geologists are odd.  Hope this helps.

  3. non

  4. Petroleum and nuclear power are both non renewable energy. There are some groups out there that will try, for the life of them, to prove that nuclear is renewable, but it's not. Uranium still needs to be tapped from the Earth.

And it took millions of years to make petroleum and uranium.

  5. they are both non-renewable source of energy...

  6. haha.

well in its simplistic definition both of them are non renewable sources of energy.

non renewable basically means those sources of energy that are not easily replenished and which at the rate we are using can only remain for a certain amount of time. so basically since both oil and uranium take years to form they are non renewable

HOWEVER nuclear energy is included in alternative sources of energy (most of which are renewable really) because even though petroleum is widely used and will finish in 40 years nucelar energy percentage is still rare and expected to last 1000's of years. hence nuclear energy is both non renewable but still an alternative form since mankind (now) do not need to worry about uranium finishing in the near future. ;)

  7. Both are non-renewable, however the nuclear power is more in supply than petroleum.
