  1. I don't think it is courteous or discourteous.

  2. It should be. People can very frequently in philosophical debates (shown all too often on Y/A as well, which is sad) be remarkably personal or rude in defending or attacking positions. This most often stems from a bigoted, arrogant and closed mind attitude that only they have the correct insights into the world.

The truth is though, that when people debate with discourteous speakers, they stubbornly dig in their heels and will defend their own position regardless of anything.

People will change their minds only if their debating rivals are courteous and respectful. The real life-changing thoughts happen in the quiet moments when we actually THINK about something. Since philosophy is a constantly fluid discipline, courteousy is the best tool for reaching mutual agreement, truth and insight.

  3. Anything can become discourteous if improperly applied.

  4. Not when it gets down to the brass tacks.

  5. That would depend on what you see as courteous or not. To me, philosophy seems generally benign, though it all depends on how one goes about it.
