  1. "Piebald" is a coloration, a term used to describe paint markings (a horse with white and solid color patches). I don't think there was ever a race horse with that as a name. The term piebald is not used commonly anymore. Most horse people will refer to "overo" or "tobiano" patterns.

  3. Piebald is the name used to describe a horse that has black and white patches on it's body.

Skewbald is a horse with brown and white spots

Tricolour is used for a horse that has black, brown and white patches.

  4. piebald is a colour, though it may have een a racehorse as well.

  5. Piebald is the name used to describe a horse that has black and white patches on it's body.  Skewbald is a horse that has brown and white patches and tricolour is used for a horse that has black, brown and white patches.

It is possible that there was once a racehorse called Piebald, but I cannot find any details.

The colour of a horse has little to do with it's breed.  Certain breeds only come in specific colours (eg Thoroughbreds only come in "solid" colours - brown, bay, black (rare), grey and chestnut).

You cannot guarantee the colour of a foal, even if you breed a bay mare to a bay stallion you may not get a bay foal!  This is why Palomino's are not recognised as a "breed" outside of the USA - you cannot absolutely guarantee a palomino foal.

  6. Wikipedia says :)

A piebald is an animal, especially a horse, that has a spotting pattern of large white and black patches. The colour of the horse's skin underneath its coat may vary between black (under the black patches of hair) and pink (under the white patches). The colouring is generally asymmetrical. Many animals also exhibit colouration of the irises of the eye that match the surrounding skin.

In the UK, it is typically considered a manifestation of the Tobiano gene, though in the United States the color scheme appears in both Overo and Tobiano individuals. The underlying genetic cause is a condition known as leucism.

Similar to the terms skewbald (chestnut or brown and white) and oddbald (bay and white), piebald is no longer in common use in the UK and all three spotted colours are more now usually referred to as Coloured. The term is still in common parlance in Ireland where piebald horses are popular amongst Irish Travellers. In the United States, the term for all large spotted colouring is pinto, with the specialized term "paint" referring specifically to a breed of horse with American Quarter Horse or Thoroughbred bloodlines in addition to being spotted, whereas pinto refers to a spotted horse of any breed. Americans usually describe the colour shade of a pinto literally: black and white, brown and white, or bay and white.

A piebald (Leucistic) Common GrackleDogs, cats, pigs, dairy cattle and many other animal species may also be piebald. Snakes, especially Ball Pythons, may also exhibit seemingly varying patches of completely pigmentless scales along with patches of pigmented scales. The term was used in The Conservationist by Nadine Gordimer when referring to kingfishers.

  7. Piebald is a colouring of a horse; its a white & brown one.

  8. i cannot find a race horse called Piebald, and as thoroughbreds only have 'solid' colours its an unlikely name. however, lots of breeds (and cross breeds) are piebald. it is not, as some people have stated, brown and white, but black and white patches on a horse. not to be confused with spots either, pibald is large patches of colour. brown and white patches are known as skewbald. there are some really beautiful coloured horses around.

check out the pics on the web page below...

  9. It is a white horse with brown patches on it.
