yeah i heard it on the news when they were talking about the movie.

It is a "popular" name that is current.  I've seen Michoacán, Panama Red, Acapulco Gold and several other names used for high grade marijuana and some times not so high grade marijuana.  Really it it is just marketing.

i know there is a kind called purple haze

and i think there is a kind grown where they grow pineapple called pineapple express but i am not to sure

It may be based off a real strain but it sounds like it is just made up for the movie.
