Is plain dyed cotton material toxic?

i bought some from spotlight, it's bright red and for a kid's toy.

Maybe. It depends on the dye. You could wash it a few times to get the excess dye off.

It should be fine.  the worst dyes are industrial dyes, and they are used on your clothes and mass dyed fabric.  If you are still worried just wash it once.

dyes may run a little. prewash all cottons anyway in hot water by themselves. rinse with vinegar to set the colors.

Cotton fabrics will shrink just a little bit.

They dyes used today are NOT toxic to anyone or the environment. This is why they run and fade so much.
