So I would say yes, playing chess could be considered a hobby.

Yes.  There can be many aspects of a hobby and chess has many different angles to enjoy.  First of all there is the basic thrill and fun of playing the game with an equally matched opponent.  Then there is all of the chess books that you can read to help improve your game.  You can study old games to gain insights into how the grandmasters play.  There are magazines to read with chess puzzles to solve.  There are many different variants of the game to learn.  Then you can collect many different boards and pieces.  There is so much to do in chess that it can go from being a hobby and become an obsession.

Yes definitely. as chess becomes more popular around the world which it is doing. more people will begin to play so if you play and play other people and those people enjoy it yes it is. and they have clubs

The IRS, Internal Revenue Service, allows hobbyists to make less than $500.00 a year selling anything they make as a hobby after that amount you must declare your money making activity a business.  So some hobbies evolve into businesses.

But I don't know if game playing is considered a hobby?

I think you and you alone can decide that for yourself. If you play for fun and it helps you relax then it's a hobby. If you are into high level competitive chess it may fall out of that category.     definition: hob-by \ 'ha be\ n, ; interest engaged in for relaxation
