no, my brother has been playing for 2 years, and he never had lessons, he's in our church band, our youth group band, and marching band, playing; but he's had musical experience, he also plays the trombone

Not really.  I moved to an area where the school had no violin, so I had to learn to play the drums. I mostly listened and practiced like crazy.
