  1. As you can see from the other posts, there are mixed opinions on whether you should call a poet something other than a "poet" based on gender.  It is not "improper" to call either a male or female poet a "poet".  However, female poets "may" be called a "poetess"...the same applies to the word "actor", where a female actor can be called either an actor or an actress.  The reason for all the confusion is the Women's liberation movement of the latter half of the last century and the move towards gender neutral words.  In some cases, such as "steward" and "stewardess", a new word has replaced both of them: "flight attendant"

So, when it doubt, use the term "poet".  If a female poet takes offense to you not calling her a "poetess", simply say, "I beg your pardon, "poetess" and get past it.  Many female poets don't like the term anymore because they feel it puts them in a separate catagory...yet some females use it extensively because they are proud of the fact that they are part of a group who have struggled to get recognized...go figure.  Just say "poet" until they tell you otherwise.

  2. IN CORRECT USAGE:

The  gender  of POET  is MALE.

The gender of POETESS is FEMALE.

  3. Female poet is called poetess.

  4. poet is the name of someone who writes poems no matter the gender.

  5. YES---poet  writes and recites a poem. mainly he recites, writer is called composer of the poem.

gen. both are called poet but actually female  poet  is called poetess in hindi( kavi- kavitri). if  a female has composed the poem  then she is   also called  composer.

  6. Poet means  a  writer of poems (the term is usually reserved for writers of good poetry). Poetess is woman poet.

  7. a poet is a writer of a poem, male or female

  8. All the answers on top have made more or less clear what you have asked . Poet is a person who writes poems irrespective of gender, male or female.

We have in India in our old traditions during the Vedic times great women rishis who were also great poets/ poetesses, like Vak, Gargi, Maitrayee. However in Sanskrit or other Indian languages they are known as kavin or Kaviyatri.

The Sanskrit word kavin is  a far better word than poet, because it upholds the meaningf of the word Kavin . A Kavin is a seer , the one who sees behind the curtain and describes what an ordinary man is incapable. He brings to light in words our feelings and emotions and writes them in the form of verse. According to Aristotle this brings about a katharsis or Chittashuddhi ( Sanskrit) of our emotional being. Poetry raises and deepens our emotions, and is one of the instrument in our education of our emotions in life. It truly brings us near to our soul .

let us see what the present day Poet - Rishi - SriAurobindo has to say on this deep question :

"Poetry raises the emotions and gives each its separate delight. Art stills the emotions and teaches them the delight of a restrained and limited satisfaction, - this indeed was the characteristic that the Greeks, a nation of artists far more artistic than poetic, tried to bring into their poetry. Music deepens the emotions and harmonises them with each other. Between them music, art and poetry are a perfect education for the soul; "  -  The National Value of Art.
