Actually Paul, American Patriot Samuel Johnson said in 1775 that "Patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel."  According to his biographer, Boswell, he meant that a false or cynical use of patriotism as a "cloak" or cover to demonize one's opponents or manipulate the populace or to use it for political advantage was the refuge of a scoundrel.  Jeez, I wonder which political party has been doing that in our times  :)
