Is precession related to Geomagnetic Reversals?

In other words, when precession happen on Dec 21, 2012, will the magnetic poles also switch places. Is this what drives the axis to shift 1 degress, and if it is, then why would the shift be slow and not immediate. Afterall it would be caused my electromagnetism. Can somebody clarify the whole precession thing and why it happenes onl 1 time every 26,000 years and what exactly causes it. Please dont wikipedia, I have already gon there.

there's no direct link we know of..

however, our geomagnetic currents are heavily weakening over the last few hundred years, and the speed at which they're doing it is only increasing... science has also found that not only can we plot the average time of pole reversals.... but that there is a huge drop in the field right before it switches.

oh yeah, procession is becuase earth wobbles on it's axis (even tho it spins around, it's poles still move,they're not stuck ina  single place, like if you stuck an olive on a tooth pick and twisted your fingers, the tips of the tooth picks move in small (only when compared to orbits of planets around moons, and bodies around a star) circles themselves... every 26,000 years it comes back to the exact point it started, i'll try to youtube it so you can have a clear picture)

in other words, it appears as if we're about to switch... but we still got a couple thousand years of weakening currents to go beofre it finally flops.

Precession happens all the time (it is a continuous process).  The main cycle (25,800 years) is caused by the Sun's gravity pulling on Earth's equatorial bulge (Earth is not a perfect sphere).

There is a 18.6 years cycle caused by the Moon.  It is a much smaller effect and it is called nutation.

There are a bunch of smaller and smaller cycles which are difficult to measure (they are so small).

None of them have anything to do with the geomagnetic reversals.  The average time between reversals is 700,000 years, but it is not a very regular cycle.

A magnetic polarity reversal takes thousands of years.  At least one thousand.  Apparently, the average is given as 5,000 years.

The choice of the 2012 date for the Big 2012 Hoax Off comes from the fact that it is the last time the Sun passes through the solstice position before the solstice position crosses the middle of the Milky Way band.  (No, it is not lined up with the Galactic centre; it can't).

The solstice position itself crosses the Galactic equator a couple of months later, but the Sun will have move on by that time.

Neither the position of the Sun relative to the solstice nor the position of the solstice relative to the equator have anything to do with our magnetic field (Otherwise, there would be a magnetic reversal every 12,900 years).

The magnetic poles move all the time.

There is a geologic record that shows it has happened many times in our past but not at regular intervals. Time between reversals can be 10000 yrs or a million years.

It is not a regular periodic occurrence, which it would be if related to precession.

We also know that the magnetic field does not collapse in the process - if it did, there would be major extinctions that correlate with the geologic record for pole reversals - there is no correlation.

The latest hypothesis is that the Earth's magnetic field gets chaotic, with lots of north and south poles - so we still have a magnetic field, but compasses will be useless. And then it straightens itself back out, but with north and south reverse.

This is actually similar to what the sun does - but the sun does it on a regular 11 year cycle.

As for when it will happen - those people that observe the magnetic field think it will go through its chaotic thing and reverse some time soon based on how it is currently behaving, but that is a hypothesis waiting for the event to occur to be tested, and the exact date certainly is not known.

Now for the rotational axis and its shift:

The axis of the earth does wobble on several known timescales. These wobbles are known as the Milankovic cycles, one of which is precession.

Basically the axis of the earth’s rotation does not always point to Polaris (the Pole Star); and we are not always inclined at 23.5 deg. So the poles do move relative to the plane of the earth’s orbit around the sun, and relative to the stars – but the shifts are minor.

There is nothing happening in 2012. Everything involving 2012 is complete bullshit.

Precession does not happen "1 time every 26000 years" as if one day the Earth suddenly precesses and goes crazy. Precession is a continuous slow cycle. It is caused by torques due to the gravity of the Sun and Moon.

Magnetic reversals have nothing whatsoever to do with precession. They are caused by currents in the deep inner Earth.

No. Precession is related to the natural laws of physics.

Earth currently spins on it's axis at a 23.5 degree angle to the Solar System ecliptic (called obliquity). This angle causes a gravitational coupling between the center of mass of the Earth and that of the other planets (and the Sun and our Moon) resulting in what is called torque.

Torque is always expressed in a right angle to the planet's (Earth's) equator. Since the Earth rotates to the right, the torque is expressed to the left or backwards. This is where the word precess comes from. The point of the north pole appears to go backwards or precess through the astrological constellations.

This is a very slow movement taking 26,000 years to complete one circle. It is not something which happens on one day. There are many factors which go into the speed of Earth's precession (called nutations) but in general terms, the average rate is about  50.27 seconds of arc every year.    Precession does not have a start or end position. Therefore precession has nothing to do with 12/21/12.

Precession does make the Milky Way band appear from Earth to go up and down in the sky according to when the sun rises if you pick one day out of the year. It does not need to be 12/21. It can be any day.

In 200AD, the Mayans developed their calendar. The Mayans do not count to infinity. This is normal for tribal people. They only counted to 13 baktuns and then started over again at 1. 13 baktuns = about 5125.4 years. The Mayans decided not to place their day 1 at our 200AD. So they place the END of 13 baktuns on a day when it would APPEAR from Earth that the Sun was rising when the Milky Way band was low on the horizon. They randomly picked 12/21 probably because it is the solstice and represents the day that the Sun returns north.

The Mayans, like practically every culture that has ever existed, had mythology based upon the sky and stars. So for them it was going to be a day of great celebration. They took pride in their mathematical and astronomical skills and this would be a morning when it would appear from Earth that the Sun was rising out of the center of the Milky Way. Party time. Unfortunately, the Spaniard invasion put an end to an already disintegrating culture. Mayans did not completely disappear. There are Mayans living today. But the historical significance of 12/21/12 was nearly lost to us.

Because of the lack of knowledge and public awareness of the Mayan culture, doomsday fanatics saw their chance to latch onto this date and present it to the gullable and uneducated as the end of the world. The use of the internet has made this the most popular end of the world dates in history but there have been many such dates presented in the past by the false prophets and scam artists who want to make money off of it.

Such is the case here.

There are people who are writing end of the world books for whoever is gullable enough to buy them. One end of the world scenario is the magnetic reversal theme.

There is no scientific evidence to back up their claims. In fact, the opposite is true. But most persons want to believe in a magical and mysterious world than do any research on a topic. After 2012 comes and goes, there will be another end of the world date. And another and another. For some people it makes life exciting.

The Earth has made about 200,000 complete precession circles or wobbles since it's creation 4.6 billion years ago.

If there was a connection between precession and magnetic reversals, it would be very easy to detect through core samples in the oceans or in Antarctica.

There is no correlation whatsoever.

It is true that the current magnetic strength is weakening. What is lacking from this statement is that although the magnetic field is weakening, it is still stronger than the past 2,000 year average.

It is true that a deep weakening occurs just prior to a reversal. What is lacking from this statement is the fact that the magnetic field strength fluctuates up and down throughout history with no apparent rhyme or reason. A weakening of the field strength is in no way whatsoever indicative of an impending reversal.

It is true that IF the field continues to weaken at the present rate that a reversal could be expected to occur between 3500AD and 4000AD but there is no reason to expect that such a weakening of the field will continue for such a long period.

It is true that a reversal would take thousands of years to complete. Making 12/21/12 not only unlikely but impossible. The last reversal occured 178,000 years ago. Making any connection to precession a false lie.
