I want to be a doctor when I grow up and I keep on hearing about the premed program you can take and I was just wondering if a premed is a separate program you take after you graduate from college or can you take that program at a college your in? Also, is there a good premed program I can find in Texas?

  1. Premed is the degree you earn, like a Bachelor's degree in Pre-Med, which enables you to apply to Med Schools

  2. Premed is any major that you can apply to med school with a bachelors in. Most people choose a science related field such as biology or chemistry.

  3. Pre-med simply means that you do a set of required courses (usually 8 science courses I think) during the course of your undergraduate degree.

You do not need to be a science major, I know engineers and english majors who do pre-med.

  4. Pre-med is just the term for a program that includes courses required to apply to med school.  It's not a separate major.  It's more of an additional  requirement.  You can major in just about anything you want as long as you complete the pre-med courses.  Most pre-med students pick a science major like biology or chemistry, though, because the courses tend to overlap, meaning they have fewer total courses to take.
