Is pretty boy Amir Khan overdoing it? – Boxing Special
Former unified IBF and WBA super lightweight champion Amir Khan has been busy marketing his rematch against Lamont Peterson scheduled for May 19 at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas.
Khan, who lost his titles to Peterson in December last year, has been on fire since the day IBF ordered an immediate rematch against Peterson. However, some folks think that Khan is doing it a bit too much for his own good.
Khan has contracted a media management firm to handle all his marketing chores. The firm has set up a website for him, a line of apparel on its way and a couple of other plans are on their way. All of this is being done just to bring back Khan’s brand to
the level it was once. After his defeat to Peterson, Khan’s reputation was badly hurt. Therefore, he now wants to bring it back to where it was standing.
However, in all these months, Khan has been a bit too excited and the lead-up from Khan’s side for the side has gone a mile extra. Khan, recently released a letter for his fans on website, telling them about his preparations for the fight.
Excerpts from the letter read, “I’m determined to win back my belts and I am ready to jump into the ring today. This fight will be different than the last one, and I’m aiming to produce the stoppage this time around. I’m really focused for this fight and
I am not looking beyond Peterson and May 19. This camp has been one of my most secluded and private to date. I’ve just got my head down and trained hard and have not done the amount of media work I usually do during my camps. Sparring for this fight has been
excellent, and I’m taking on a lot of bigger guys who are similar to Peterson in order to prepare me for this fight.”
Not only this, Khan has been constantly giving interviews, revealing how good and strong he is feeling for the fight. In his previous interview, Khan revealed that he would be training with WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao for his rematch. According
to Khan, training alongside Pacquiao is a pleasure in its own since Pacquiao has a lot of knowledge to share.
While all of this might sound good to Khan’s fans, the negative side to it is that if Khan loses, all of this will backfire. Khan has already called Peterson a ‘loser’ and an ‘unethical champion’ on many occasions. On the other hand, Peterson has remained
quiet most of the time saying that he will bring Khan down in the ring. If that actually happens then definitely all of Khan’s claims will be washed away. But, that is not the main issue here. Khan, who has been boasting about himself for quite some time now,
might not like the fact that after all the glorious talks he finally was laid to rest in the ring against Peterson.
A month earlier, Khan named this match as a ‘career make or break’ match. By now, whatever hype Khan has created, has made this match indeed a career make or break match. If Khan loses, not only he loses his last chance to grab his titles back, he also loses
is rapport and all the credibility and sympathy he has built in the last four months after the loss.
