Is propofol a decent drug that doesn't have permanent side effects on a person like Versed does?

I will be having major 'female' surgery done next month and after the one (and only) experience that I had with Versed (It left me with permanent memory loss, and PTSD along with a few other severe emotional issues.) I have all ready told the Dr, written to the hospital's head of the Anesthesia department and plan to have a patient advocate with me for pre-op and the sugery so I don't get slipped this poison into my IV.

I'm hoping that I don't need to have any 'sedatives' with general anesthesia (that seems like overkill to me,) but if I do, I was wondering if Propofol has the same god-awful side effects that Versed does. I am able to tolerate Ativan, Xanex and Valium.

  1. I had Propofol in my IV when I had my wisdom teeth out (in conjunction with conscious sedation). I never felt a thing and the experience was very easy for me. And my body doesn't handle medicine very well so I was sure I would feel terribly afterward. But to my surprise the experience was a breeze. I too was given Versed a year later for another procedure and it was the worst procedure of my life. I think that the drug is barbaric and I was never given proper anesthesia because I was given Versed (in hopes that it would make me forget the torture and pain of the procedure). Needless to say I had the same traumatic experience and I would NEVER used Versed again. But I remember my wisdom teeth procedure being so easy and so I called my doctor shortly after to ask about my drug cocktail. They gave me propofol with my  anesthesia. My body handled the drug well, but again everyone is different. My body reacted terribly to Versed and because you have had the same experience I would say that it's definitely worth trying Propofol. But perhaps you could ask your doctor before the procedure how well people have handled Propofol in the past, especially as compared to Versed. I wish you an easy and quick surgery.
