I am thinking of getting a new job in a local pub, is it hard to memorise all the orders and prices?? Also am I wrong in assuming it is difficult knowing where everything goes? Thanks

  1. One of the most awkward things that can happen in a pub is when your pint-to-toilet cycle gets synchronised with a complete stranger.

  2. Bar jobs are hard work if the bar is a busy one.

Most have automated tills that will add up the prices as you go along.

The actual physical part of the job is hardest as you can be on your feet, rushing around quite alot.

I worked behind a bar for a few years and it was lots of fun, we had a laugh with the other staff and customers and the tips were ok too

  3. As  with the above answers, it depends on the place. If seeking a job in a bar, (or restaurant), you want to make good tips.  Only bartenders and servers make tips, although some other places split tips. The higher the price structure, the better the tips(a% of sales)  Better places often you will make a higher % of sales(more generous, often more wealthy clientele) The best customers are other bartenders and servers, they make their living by the tip.  Also necessary for good tips is a dependable, steady business during the week(slower business) Also less money at lunch(lower prices, shorter shifts, cheaper tippers) The ideal service job would be nights only, at an established restaurant, with a high price structure.  Never apply for an opening (a brand-new restaurant), they always overhire(small sections), they are not established, they may not even survive.

  4. bar jobs and all restaurant jobs are hard.  but it gets easier with practice.  After a while all you hear and see are the food and drinks so you will eventually memorize all of the stuff without even trying

  5. not really, but as with any new job it takes time to learn.

bar staff tend to make lots of money so its probably worth the trouble.

  6. Depends what bar you work in. I have worked and run bars across the Costa Del Sol and it can be good meeting new people and that. I would never work in a nightclub!!

  7. Well it depends on where you are working and what your job would actually involve (responsabilties)

but if it was a average bar then it is not easy at busy times, but you will find you meet some interesting people and have a good laugh while your at it!

  8. Depends on the bar

if its busy, ya the work would be hard

  9. It's only hard if the bar is busy.

  10. Depends on the pub..... a quiet local is easy.... same people & orders over n over, not that busy.... but for example Yates on a Friday & Saturday night very hot very sweaty people shouting at you changing their minds....hard hard work!

And normally all the prices are on the till.... you just need to remember what you've served or ring it up as you go.

  11. I worked in pubs for about 5-6 years.

They can be very hard work depending onwhat type - some are more food led which means lots of food orders, carry plates, learning menus and big lunch time rush!

Others are more drink based and they can mean long hours, working late, learning drinks, busy at weekends so you are usually asked to work fri/sat nights. dealing with drunk people!

But overall i loved it. Great people, great atmosphere, you meet loads of people. Even though the hours can be long, you get into it and it can be very fulfilling. Be prepared to learn the menus and drinks, but becasue you are surrounded by them everyday, you will learn fast

Good luck, and have fun! the best thing about someone behind a bar is when it looks like they are enjoying themselves - the customers will soon follow suit
