  1. Thanks for being honest Leo, that it is your opinion.

Simslover1100 probably got so many thumbs down because she says she goes to a public school but that we should trust her that homeschoolers have no friends. I'm not sure what she's basing that on.

Anyway, it depends which school your talking about and in what aspect is is "bad" for you.

Your school may have an incredible educational system. Your school may be the safest, cleanest, friendliest school there is. Your school may have an okay educational system, or maybe one that graduates students who can't read. You may have threats in your school every day or really have people who bring guns to school and drugs may be in abundance.

Bad is an opinion. In my opinion a bad school would be one with a poor educational system, and an abundance of violence, threats, and drugs.

Answering this question is mostly difficult because each school is different, and you can't lump public schools together.

  2. I don't think so. Some are better than others.

Homeschooling is still my preference. It's not like if homeschooling is good that means public schools are bad, nor does it mean that if schools are good that homeschooling must be bad.

It doesn't have to be one or the other is bad-- it's just nice to have choices to find what suits us best.

  3. yes and no. the public school system does what it's meant to do. turn you into a obedient robot.

    therefore

it's good for companies, politicians, rich people etc.

    bad for everyone else.

it's bad because it conditions you to be a robot(which totally defeats the purpose of being human).

it's good because that way we will all work dilligently for big companies so they become more rich, powerful and greedy. then we can bully other countries.

you decide, is public school bad for us?

read John Taylor Gatto if you want to know more about school. or just do some research.

  4. It does depend on the school and the student, but I think public school overall has some disadvantages.

Here's a comparison of homeschooling and public schooling:

Here's a blog that talks about some of the disadvantages of public school:

    Hope that helps!

  5. It appears as though they didn't do you any favors.

  6. We are a homeschooling family but I don't think all public schools are bad.  We prefer to homeschool for a lot of different reasons.  Homeschooling has worked best for our family.  Each family is different and make their own choices.  Parents in general (not all but in general) do what they feel is best for their families.  Whether it be homeschooling or sending their children to public/private school.

  7. YES

  8. Public schools aren't inherently bad. Some of them, however, certainly do more damage than they're worth. It's the same with homeschooling - it isn't bad in and of itself, but if you have the wrong kids or the wrong parents doing it, it gets very bad very quickly.

Look at what you(the student) are willing to do and how you think you best do it, and if you feel you can get a better education from your parents or from whatever public school you're near.

  9. no they are not, its just the school that you choose that could ruin your life. schools that have a high repretation of drug users is a NO. we all no that there is drugs in the schools but its what kind of friends you make, its the decisions you make. I was never peer presured into drugs, ive never taken any in my whole life, but my brother who is 4 years younger then me did, but not many times, but it shows how different the school changed in 4 years. If they know whats right and wrong then they will be fine

  10. I am not a fan of the public school system. It did not work for my family, but for many it does. That is why options are so important.

  11. i go to a public school

    its fine

    nothin out of the normal

    actually i really like it

  12. Hi there,

I feel sorry for simslover1100, i don't understand what is to disapprove about what she said... over 15 thumbs down, why?...

MY OPINION: No matter how bad things one can say about public schools, AT LEAST ONE THING IT TEACHES YOU THAT HOME SCHOOL CAN'T : SOCIAL SKILLS!!!!

    I rest my case.

PS: "Ofcourse this is just my opinion.. i could be wrong!" Dennis Miller

Edit after 5 thumbs down: Yes it's true.. i am a lucky example, didn't had to deal with drugs on school or gun threats ...so , in my particular case the bad parts left (inefficiency of the system, crazy frustrated teachers etc.) turned out to help me alot in the years after... maybe because i always try to see everything turning to good, no matter how long would it take.

Nice discussion going on here :)

  13. Bad...... in what context. Public schools admits all children, including students with special needs so naturally they cannot maintain same academic standards as a private school or home school. Further, it offers a general program, designed for all children, which usually includes math, English, reading, writing, science, history and physical education. The children at most public schools usually reflect the community, there is a diversity of student backgrounds as against private school or home school where parents involvement is more. Class size in a private school is small (or at home school where there are 1-2 student). So, individual attention to students is more. But it's incorrect to say, public schools are not good. Moreover, within public school system, academic reputation of individual school differ. Schools at good location in city are good. You  must consider a few things while choosing a particular school. The following article might help you:

  14. Actually, it really depends on the person. Some kids love public school because it is an open environment where they not only learn text related lessons, but also life lessons. Then there are some kids who feel that public school just isn't for them. They may feel suffocated by the number of students. If so, then a private school or even homeschooling could most likely be  a good choice for them.

    I hope I helped.

  15. I think you meant to formulate your question in one of the following ways:

    Are Public Schools bad?

    or

    Is Public School bad?

The answer, it depends on the student.  Public School works wonderfully for many kids, and has been a real blessing for this country as a whole.  That doesn't make it right for every student though.  That is why its nice to have options like private school, homeschool, and independent study.

  16. It depends on what you want to be taught. Evolution is taught in Schools, Creation can be taught in Homeschool. That's just an example.

  17. Well I just sat in Juvenile Court today and can tell you that public school in my town is very bad. Every child except for one failed their drug test. They tested positive for marijuana and benzodiazapan, ( both may be spelled wrong). Now, that doesn't mean that every child is on drugs but all of these children claimed to have done these at school. Now in my opinion, this is very wrong. I did withdraw my child from school and have decided to home school. I ask you this..... If you are paying a daycare to care for your children and you find out that 1/4 of those children at the daycare bring drugs and use them at the daycare, would you continue to use the facility or would you find another place to send your children? Everyday, when I drop off my 9th grader, she gets out of the car and I say, "have a good day and I love you." Never in a million years did I think that all of these things were going on. I don't know about you but I will not send my child to that type of environment.

Now that I have withdrawn my child she tells me that there is much more to the story. People having s*x in the bathrooms, people passing out pills like they are candy, and the list goes on and on. There was even a boy in court today that is in the third grade that had exposed himself at school. What in the world is going on and where are the teachers during all of this?

  18. theys is greats for us!

  19. Public schooling pros:

    * lots of contact with others your age

    * standardized testing/comparison with your peers

    * rigidly defined curricula

    Homeschooling pros:

    * "socialization" isn't just with your own peer group when you get older. In the "real world" you will work with people not from your race, age, and social strata. Unless you have a deliberately insular homeschool, HS gets the edge on more varied socialization

    * varied curricula can be 100% tailored for each child. Even the best public school can't have a 1-1 teacher/student ratio.

    * testing can be "end result" based. In other words, instead of "Can you spout a bunch of dates for battles in the Civil War?", the question may be "Can you express why the Civil War started, how it progressed, and why the Confederacy eventually lost as well as the fallout on both sides?" Gaining "understanding" of an event versus a basic "head knowledge" of random facts which may or may not be retained in later life

    Public school cons

    * adverse influences (drugs/alcohol/delinquents)

    * individuality tends to be crushed. Uniformity is needed to make the school "function" well. (See J.T. Gatto for more at length...)

    * standardized testing can have bias toward certain racial/ethnic groups and also sometimes only demonstrates "factoid recall" instead of true understanding of the material

    Homeschool cons

    * CAN be too insular if someone doesn't make the effort (i.e. If all your friends are of one race/social strata/age then the homeschooled child may find it an abrupt transition when they enter the workforce)

    * CAN (in a tiny tiny number of cases) serve as a shelter for abuse of children involved

Overall, the best answer is to allow parents latitude in educational choice. For some parents public schools are the right choice, private school for others, and others homeschool. There is no "right" answer for everyone.

  20. No public schools aren't all bad - some are.  Just like homeschooling isn't bad but some parents don't make it work.

  21. It really depends on the school and the student.  Some public schools are phenomenal, while others...I wouldn't subject a rabid wolf to.

It's like nearly anything in life - public/private/homeschools, colleges, jobs, clubs, relationships, etc.  Some are great, some are so-so, and some are bad.

I personally prefer homeschooling, but the schools in my area tend toward the so-so to downright bad end of the scale; however, that's the schools in my area.  The ones in your area might be great.  It just really depends.

  22. In certain areas it is....

  23. I went to public school and except for a couple of issues I attribute to having grown up in that environment, it certainly wasn't worse for me than my own home environment.

That said, my husband and I have enough issues with our schools here as parents and teachers that we decided to homeschool our children. Would public school be "bad" for them? No. We just don't believe it would be as good for them.

ADDED: simslover got so many thumbs down because she made a faulty assumption: that homeschoolers don't know what it's like to have friends.

  24. I think public school was bad for me.  It was boring, and the teachers were often cruel and inaccurate.  It was a degrading and unnecessary experience for me in public school.

Not knowing who us is, I can't say for sure.  It is unnecessary to go to public school.  For some dysfunctional families, it may be an escape for an abusive home life.  Of course that is not the norm, but possible.

Unschooling is such a wonderful lifestyle for me that I think public school would be bad for my own family.

    :D

  25. According to your grammar, I would think so!!

  26. I am not saying that all are but ones here and in some of the surronunding areas are appauling! Are district may sound good but guns and pics of guns coming to school?? Bullies? Harrasment?? Look closer not just at the surface! I am homeschooled and I LOVE It!
