  2. OMG!  No is not, how dare you even ask that!  My island is not a state...and that is good with me.

  3. Puerto Rico is a Commonwealth of the United States.

United States took a hold of Puerto Rico after a long, bloody fight. But PR said to the USA, "Hey man, we are okay with enjoying the priviledges that America has to offer, but papi, we are not stupid, we also want freedom to do a lot of things without you dictating anything to us." and United States had to agree or else....

That is why Puerto Rico created the Commonwealth or the Free Associated State status that PR enjoys.

The Commonwealth status was created by Puerto Rico. It gives Puerto Rico many priviledges that most dependent territories do not have.

Puerto Ricans are Special and Smart, we created a commonwealth that suite us. PR is not as depended of the USA as most people think. We have the Commonwealth status to enjoy.

...And I repeat, PR created the Commonwealth status and a lot of other countries have follow after PR- giving the same benefit or similar benefits to their depended territories.  Thanks to Puerto Rico.

  4. Puerto Rico is an unincorporated territory of the United States, as Guam and U.s. Virgin Islands.

  5. A state as like in the United States?  No not yet..Hawaii is our last state being number 50.  Porto Rico is only a Territory.

    a

  6. Puerto Rico is not a state, but it is very similar to several US states because it is a US Territory

  7. Puerto Rico isn't a state, and I don't think it ever will be.  The fact of the matter is that the Puerto Ricans themselves have already decided this on three different occassions, via special elections.  All three times, they rejected statehood.  It is no longer likely that the US Congress will extend a formal invitation to Puerto Rico to join the Union.

Recently the US government released a report that has been a decade in the making.  Citing the US Constitution, it rejects the notion that Commonwealth Status is an option or even legal.  The only legal choices are statehood or complete independence.  This subject is getting a lot of press coverage in the spanish speaking media, and it's only a short matter of time before the Jones Act is overturned.  See below.

  8. No, it is a protectorate of the U.S.

  9. I seen somewhere on the news wear they was trying to make it a state.

  10. Puerto Rico is not a state, it is a territory.  More detailed we are an "unincorporated and organized" territory of the United States.

  11. how dare you to ask this question men? you can't even spell Puerto rico and you are asking something so obvious that PR is not listed under the 50 states of the union, however let me tell you a little secret, Puerto rico its not a state of the union neither its a sovern state, its just a territory of the US, thats it!!! Im from Puerto Rico and it is very though to live knowing that our rights for democracy are reduce to none, and that we are not part of the union and neither are independent to make our own decisions...

  12. No. I can't believe you seriously just asked that. There are 50!!!!

  13. No.  Puerto Rico is not a state.

  14. No.

    A commonwealth.

  15. Nooo, Puerto Rico is a territory of the US since a lot of time ago.According to the United States Supreme Court, an unincorporated territory is “a territory appurtenant and belonging to the United States, but not a part of the United States."

  16. No. its a common wealth, we are US citizens with rights to travel without a visa in and out of the US only, we use the same currency and we get benefits from US, kinda like Guam.

what does the US offer PR, federal benefits.

and what does PR give in exchange, military bases,

and the biggest and smartest satellite in the world in Arecibo.

  17. It is a colony.  Plain and simple, you can call it a protectorate, a commonwealth, a territory, etc, but that does not changes the simple fact that it is a colony and its citizens are not allowed to decide whether to become a state or an independent country.  It is in fact, the oldest colony in the world, since 1492 Puerto Rico has been the possesion of other nations, from 1492 to 1898 it was Spain, since 1898 to today, the U.S.
