I.E Elvish promanad, put x tokens into play where x is the number of elves, does this mean those x are a spell? and something like tauren mauler gets +x/+x because of such a move?

  1. No. Playing the Elvish Promenade will count as playing 1 spell. When the tokens come into play, they come as an effect of the promenade, thus they are not spells and will not trigger the maulers ability.

Tokens can not be played, they only come into play (because of a spell, ability, etc), so they are not spells and are not counted towards abilities like taurean mauler's.

  2. Short and sweet:

Tokens are produced by spells, but are not spells themselves.

    Example:

Chatter of the Squirrel ( http://ww2.wizards.com/gatherer/CardDeta... ) is a sorcery so that means it is a spell.  It's ability produces a 1/1 squirrel token.  The token is not what I played, the sorcery was.  The effect of the sorcery is to make a squirrel.

Look at it this way.  Spells are everything that could be played from your hand excluding lands.  So when I made that squirrel right there, it wasn't the squirrel I played from my hand, but a spell called Chatter of the Squirrel, which in turn produces a squirrel.

  3. No the mauler would only get +1/+1 for the spell not for the x's which are an effect.

  4. tokens coming into play is an effect not a spell

so in your elvish promenade example

elvish promenade is the spell and the tokens are the effect so since it is only one spell no matter how many tokens it creates your taurean mauler would only get one counter.

what is your deck that it has both of those in it.
