That depends on all of the facts and circumstances - such as, the age of the child; where the desk/table is located relative to the teacher and the other students; what occurred that caused the teacher to place the child there; how long the child was kept there; whether or not there are special circumstances regarding the child, and so forth.  

    So, since most school districts have "Codes of Conduct" or "Discipline Codes" which describe various forms of misbehavior and what the consequence is for students who cause infractions, that is a good starting point for the answer to your specific situation.

    The BEST answer, of course, is to look up your local bar association and find a lawyer who concentrates his/her law practice in SCHOOL LAW and get a consultation for a nominal fee ($30 to $50 through the bar association referral programs, in most areas of the country) and discuss your facts with the lawyer. If you qualify, you might also be able to utilize your local Legal Aid Association; they usually have staff attorneys experienced in school law.
