Is putty good as a filler when decorating windows

my windows need painting.. i have rubbed down and now need some filling.. i know there are many products to use ie wood filler etc but i have lots of putty

can i use it last time i used some plaster and it cracked when the weather got warm and was rubbish

  1. Well done for having a go.Yes wood-fillers, plastic padding,plastic wood all serve the purpose. You have experience the consequences of using the wrong materials before, so why would you be so daft as to do it again. Putty is just putty with some oil in it to keep it soft, once the wood absorbs the oil the putty dries and contracts,hence the cracking. Get a "Wood-Rot- Repair - Kit" from the hardware store.  


  2. That's what my Dad used to use..good enough back then..I would give it a go..so long as it is still good and not all dried up..good luck

  3. Oil based putty ('glazing putty") is the only material that will provide a satisfactory, long term seal.  Here's video demonstrating the steps to reglaze a wood frame window-
