Question:

Is "Batman" a real surname? (not joking!)?

No, this is a serious question...and I am *not* talking about the superhero in any way.

Is "Batman" an actual last name?

Or is it a misspelling of "Bateman".

If so, what nationality is it?

I read it on a mailbox in an apartment building.

Not joking.

  9. Originally surnames were used to differentiate say one "James" from another...so they started labeling people (giving them what we now call surnames) according to where they lived or what they did for a living...in England, for instance, many people have names like Archer, Bugler, Taylor, Baker, etc.....so.......Batman could well be a surname.

  10. Yahoo! People Search lists 328 Batmans living in the U. S. Reaney and Wilson's A Dictionary of English Surnames gives the name as a variant of Bateman (not the same as a misspelling), along with Baitman and Battman, and defines it as "servant of Bartholomew."  So no relation to Bruce Wayne!

  11. Batman is a real surname.  My husbands great grandfather, John Moody had a sister name Mae Wallace Moody whose married name was Batman. She married John Batman.   It isn't pronounced like BAT-MAN , (like the superhero)  it is pronounced Bat-min (with the emphasis on the first syllable like in the surname Hoffman) .  The Batman branch in my husbands family moved from Fort Smith, Arkansas area to Oklahoma.
