Is "Hey Jude" an appropriate song for a mezzo soprano?

I'm going to see my voice teacher tomorrow anyways, but I had to ask.

My 2nd cousin is getting married, and since I'm a singer, she's like me to sing "Hey Jude" at the rehearsal dinner since the other song I'm singing for the ceremony is classical, her finace would really like "Hey Jude", and it's a surprise for all the 100 guests at the rehearsal dinner.

Yay or nay?

  1. I think it's extremely depressing and I've never really thought of sad songs as wedding appropriate.  Plus since the lyrics keep talking about Go out and get her, it's like he lost her, instead of about to marry her.

As for being a mezzo soprano, I think any song like that can be changed into your range without a problem.  That's a rather simple song so it could be moved up easily without sounding odd.

  2. I can't picture a woman singing Hey Jude, and definitely not in the mezzo soprano range. I'm sure your voice teacher will give you her honest opinion, though.
