Is "Serial Experiment Lain" one of those anime that doesn't make sense until the last episode?

Serial Experiment Lain is one of my favorite animes because it is an anime that makes you think.  It's purposely full of misdirection and philosophical questions.  Why do you think that each episode is called a "layer," like that of an onion?  The core question that Lain deals with is what defines reality.  As the series wears on, the line between the real world and what the anime refers to as "the wired" become blurred.  Is reality actually reality, or is reality made up of what everyone *perceives* is reality?  I know that sounds like a tricky question, but it's the type of question that the anime asks.

By the way, the ending is pretty sad, at least from my perspective.

serial experiment lain is one of those anime shows.  i watched it last year and i didnt understand it clearly.  then i got bored so i watched the last 2 episodes and it was all clear to me.  i stopped at episode 5 and watched some quick clips.
