Is "The Road" an allegory to "Odyssey"?

In "The Road" by Cormac McCarthy, the father and son go through a journey and explore the effects of an apocalyptic occurrence. Please explain how both are similar and different.

  1. They aren't very similar.

    In the Road the world is destroyed beyond repair

    In the odyssey all is eventually repaired

    In the road father and son are united until the end

    in the odyssey they are parted until the end

    The main characters in the road are powerless and without agency

    the main characters in the odyssey were able to stand up to a god

    Some similarities:

    you could look through the various tribulations that both faced to look for similarities:

    i.e. cannibals in both

    a seemingly hopeless voyage

    loss of one's wife

    alienation from teh world you inhabited.

    If you haven't yyet you should really read "The Road" it's a great novel.
