Is "redneck" a derogatory word or not? I've seen people refer to themselves as "rednecks" for Obama but isn't?

the word "redneck" supposed to be disparaging? Or are they using it in the same context that rappers use the N word?

  1. It's all in the context and intent of the speaker - I think your analogy is right on.

  2. Well, I can only tell you my 2 cents.. and I live in the South( AL).. We live out in the country.. grew up on a farm..like to go fishing..go mudden in our 4x4..ride horses...4wheelers..and so forth.. So to 'me' redneck isn't something that's degrading...it's just a *way that some southerners are* I don't think it makes you any less of a human than anyone else either.( but just so ya know.. I don't like the "N" word) I just think it sounds awfull no matter how it's used.

  3. Does anyone like to be called out of their proper name?

Then why call someone a "redneck"?

The only reason for name calling is lack of education, which would make it hard for someone to verbalize what they want to say without calling names.

  4. Many words are considered derogatory if used by someone they don't apply to to describe others and not when used by members of the group to refer to themselves.

Yes, same context as a black man referring to his friends as 'my n.....'.

  5. It's not derogatory if you accept what you are and call yourself by the terminology. African- Americans often call themselves the "N" word but there are even segments of their own race that find it offensive.

Just don't try it yourself. If you think that Politics is full of hypocrisy try race relations. I have personally gotten into so much trouble trying to be politically correct that I have simply given up. One simply cannot get through this life without someone taking offence to the simple fact that you were born.

  6. If you call someone from the south a redneck, yes, it's derogatory. Imagine if someone called you the "N" word?

Let's leave the silly names out of it.

    People are people.

  7. Redneck is not a derogatory term, but more a true stereotype.  Go to any NASCAR race and you will see what I mean.  It's a way of life.  Trailer, hound dog, busch beer, cousins.

  8. It CAN be used as an insult, but usually its just a harmless label,

you may be thinking of the phrase "white trash," that's considered derogatory
