  1. It is not as bad as Mr. Bitter says.

There is an attempted rape, but no nudity is shown, and the act is not condoned by any of the other characters. There are implied s*x scenes, and some nudity, but nothing lewd. There is some swearing, but it is not gratuitous. There is murder, yes. In the beginning, the novel could almost be described as a murder mystery. Rarely is any of the killing shown, and when it is, it is not glorified. As for the dismembered kidnapping victim - it is not shown, only insinuated, and if that should be the basis of censorship, you may as well not let your daughter watch the news. The novel is very deep and the characters are very complex. Some of the themes include knowledge and awareness, war and conflict, and morality. I don't think the graphic content should stand in the way of an amazing piece of literature. If you think she is mature enough to understand the concepts and philosophies presented, then by all means, let her read it.

  2. Not unless you think murder, rape, and the realization that a child kidnapping victim has been murdered, dismembered and fed to dogs, is appropriate for mature 13 year old.

  3. reading is always a good thing.  encourage it.  consider reading books with her and allowing her to ask questions when needed.

  4. sure
