I am turning 16 and have recently become a Vegetarian, or more technical, a Lacto-Ovo Vegetarian. I've been doing a lot of research lately and have come across a quite alot of information about the hormone drug used on Dairy Cows, rBGH(recombinant bovine growth hormone). But alot of the sites I am getting this information from are American. I want to find out if the dairy farms of Australia are using this hormone as well? If so, is their any milk brand of which does not do this...?

  1. Nope, Australia is rBGH-free.  As is most of the rest of the world...it's just Americans that can't get it.

  2. No RBGH is not allowed to be used in Australia. The hormone has been banned in Australia, New Zealand and the European Union. The US still allows the use of RBGH though.

  3. Australia has banned the use of rBGH.

  4. I don't think its true for Australia.

Here is a cut from the notes i wrote about this hormone last year. I used to have the word "Australia" in the text but a reliable source corrected me.

In the USA and some parts of Australiasia they use a hormone growth agent called recombinant bovine somatotropin. Its brand name is POSILAC® and its made by Monsanto. This increases milk yield and beef growth. This is a synthetic hormone. Its banned in the EU since 1988

The main mechanism these hormones work is by re-directing dietry nutrients from peripheral body tissue to mammary glands. effectively, they are slowly killing the cow.

70% of US cattle are injected with this growth hormone ( 2007 stats ) that the majority of the world will not entertain because they believe its too dangerous.
